Contraceptive insert

An intrauterine device (IUD) is a contraceptive method recommended for women who have given birth, have already fulfilled their plans for motherhood, or are postponing them until later. The most important contraindications for this type of contraception are:

  • increased risk of sexually transmitted infections (polygamy, active and past infections, immunocompromised states)
  • presence of anatomical abnormalities in the reproductive organs (fibroids, polyps).

Copper IUDs and levonorgestrel-releasing IUDs are currently available on the market, with the latter being recommended primarily for women who complain of prolonged and heavy menstrual bleeding.

The IUD is inserted within 7 days of the onset of menstrual bleeding, immediately after a miscarriage that occurred in the first trimester of pregnancy, and after the postpartum period (6 weeks after delivery). The insertion of the IUD should be preceded by a gynaecological examination, an assessment of the vaginal biocenosis and a follow-up ultrasound examination of the genital organs.
