Kyleena intrauterine device
The Kyleena system is designed to prevent pregnancy (contraception) for up to 5 years.
Kyleena is an intrauterine system (IUS) that, once placed in the uterus, continuously releases small amounts of a hormone called levonorgestrel (LNG). The Kyleena system works by thickening the mucus in the cervix, which prevents sperm from passing through the cervical canal. This prevents sperm from coming into contact with the egg and thus prevents fertilisation. Kyleena also reduces the monthly increase in the thickness of the uterine lining.
Important features of the Kyleena system:
- It releases a small dose of hormone, does not contain oestrogen,
- does not affect the normal functioning of the ovaries,
as its action is mainly local, ovulation occurs during the use of the Kyleena system.
The Kyleena system is inserted using a special applicator (insertor) on a gynaecological chair with a speculum in place. After insertion, the patient may experience pain similar to menstrual cramps, which usually subsides after a few days. The Kyleena system is inserted within 7 days of the start of menstruation. Contraceptive action occurs immediately after insertion. When replacing the system with a new one, there is no need to wait for your period.
